Steve,
You have opened a subject whose implications may be difficult for SDA's. I notice there have been no comments. The underlying question is: "What is life about?" Many of us in the SDA subculture live as though the goal is to make our lives work according to the values of the culture, i.e. health, wealth, good relationships, and ease, the things we label as "blessings." We believe that Adventism is the best route to these goals (witness those who say, "Even if it turns out to not be true, Adventism is still the best way to live.") If this is how we live our lives, then we are worshipping idols and regardless of what we say we believe, we have become functional Mormons.
